Summary
1. Components of male seminal fluids are known to stimulate fecundity and fertility in females of many insect species, and paternal effects on offspring phenotypes have been reported in others. However, no studies have yet sought links between male influence on female reproduction and paternal effects on progeny.
2. In separate experiments employing 10 d-old virgin female Cheilomenes sexmaculata (F.), we varied male age and mating history to manipulate levels of male seminal fluids and found that effects on maternal fertility were mirrored by changes in progeny development. Older virgin males remained in copula longer than younger ones, induced higher levels of female fecundity and fertility, and sired progeny that developed faster to yield heavier adults.
3. When male age was held constant (13 d), female fecundity and fertility declined as a function of previous male copulations, progeny developmental times increased, and the adult weight of daughters was reduced.
4. These results suggest that male epigenetic factors accelerate progeny development in concert with female reproductive stimulation; both categories of effects increased as a consequence of male celibacy (factor accumulation), and diminished as a function of previous matings (factor depletion).
5. Male factors that influence female reproduction are implicated in sexual conflict and parental effects may extend this conflict to offspring phenotype. Mothers control the time and place of oviposition events and can use maternal effects to taylor progeny phenotypes to suit prevailing or anticipated conditions, but fathers are more constrained. Because polyandrous females remate frequently, paternal fitness will be maximized by inducing rapid female oviposition and the production of highest quality offspring first.
